Texas Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong previously indicated Tyrone Swoopes might not have a firm grip on the starting quarterback job, when he said redshirt freshman Jerrod Heard was “closing the gap” in the competition.
However, following Texas’ spring game on Saturday, Strong made it very clear who was leading the way right now.
Tyrone Swoopes is the No. 1 quarterback of the Texas Longhorns; at least for now.
“Ty is still the No. 1 guy at this moment,” Strong said.
A strong reason for the Longhorns to go with Swoopes over Heard to start the season is experience. Texas opens the season on the road against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, so they will need to put their best foot forward.
“I hope I don’t have to go into that game starting a redshirt freshman,” Strong added.
But while Strong says Tyrone Swoopes is currently the top quarterback on the depth chart, there is plenty of time until that season-opener for things to change.
If Heard is able to throw the football with some consistency and shows maturity throughout the summer, it is not out of the question that he could overtake Swoopes for the starting job.
We will just have to wait and see.
In the meantime, there is one thing we know for sure. In Strong’s words, “It’s going to be fun going into the summer with those two guys battling it out.”
