There is an interesting rumor beginning to make the rounds on the Internet which links Arizona Wildcats head coach Rich Rodriguez to the Virginia Tech Hokies head coaching vacancy.
Sure, it is just a rumor that has no factual backing, but the speculation and reasoning behind the move seems to make plenty of sense.
According to BlueGoldSports.com, Rich Rodriguez could be the man who will take over at Virginia Tech when Frank Beamer retires. Beamer apparently has “at least two more years remaining before he could potentially walk away.”
The mean and potatoes of the rumor is as follows:
“Multiple sources have indicated to me that Whit Babcock has already approached current Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez about replacing Frank Beamer at Virginia Tech. While I was not told directly the two had met there was a strong indication that there had been a personal meeting in the not-so-distant past.”
In case you were wondering why there is even a tie between Rich Rodriguez and Virginia Tech, it is because of VaTech Director of Athletics Whit Babcock, the man who approached Rodriguez, according to the rumor.
Babcock was previously the Executive Director of Development at West Virginia. During his tenure with the Mountaineers, Rich Rodriguez was the team’s head coach.
There have been plenty of reports in the past about the strong relationship between the two, so it wouldn’t be too far of a stretch to see the two men rejoin forces.
Of course, it won’t be happening in the immediate future, but it will be something to keep an eye out on.
