Group text messages are a natural occurrence in daily life, but the coaches of the Iowa State Cyclones basketball team just took them to a new level.
A tweet by assistant coach Charlie Henry not only showcased how the coaches communicate with each other and come up with ideas for the team, but that head coach and former NBA sharpshooter Fred Hoiberg appears to be back in action after recently undergoing open heart surgery.
The NBA teams and time codes in the message are references to plays in NBA playoff games, from which Hoiberg and his staff draw ideas for plays to use with the Cyclones.
It’s an interesting technique, as the professional ranks are highly different from the college ones, but it appears to be working.
Since taking over at Iowa State back in 2010, Hoiberg has gone 115-56 and made the Cyclones perennial NCAA tournament contenders, getting as far as the Sweet Sixteen in 2014. He has also brought home two consecutive Big 12 Conference championships.
Either way, this is a highly entertaining look into not only how coaches look to better their teams, but how they communicate with assistants. This staff gets along great, and that’s only going to help Iowa State moving forward.
More importantly, happy return to Coach Hoiberg.
