No. 1 PG Malik Newman Commits to Mississippi State

It has been a strange season on the basketball recruiting front as a large number of big name recruits have waited until very late in the process to commit.

Examples of these holdout recruits include big men Caleb Swanigan and Ivan Rabb, who committed to Michigan State and Cal respectively two weeks ago, along with small forward Jaylen Brown, who has still not made a decision on where he will be playing next year.

Another holdout is now off the board as 5-star guard Malik Newman, a Jackson, Mississippi native, announced that he’ll be staying close to home with his commitment to Mississippi State this afternoon.

While rumors swirled of him committing to the Bulldogs earlier this week, those were shot down by Newman who waited until today to make it official.

This commitment is huge for Ben Howland’s program, one that has failed to land recruits like this in the past. Newman is rated as the No. 1 guard in the 2015 class and the No. 8 player overall by 247 Sports’ Composite Rankings.

The 6-foot-3 guard chose MSU over powerhouse schools such as Kentucky, Kansas and LSU.
