CFB reaches new low with scholarship offer for 7th grader

There is such thing as “too young.” And “too ridiculous.” Apparently the greater college football recruiting arena isn’t familiar with either of those terms yet.

Need proof? CollegeSpun reported Friday that Louisville has extended a scholarship offer to seventh grader Tee Webb.

Yes, a seventh grader. We can understand extending offers to underclassmen in high school, but a seventh grader?

Lets back up and remember how gargantuan the jump from the seventh grade to high school senior is. Most kids aren’t listening to the same music or eating the same after-class snacks by the time they graduate high school, let alone playing the same sports they were in middle school. Extending a scholarship offer to a kid who might not even like football in the next couple years seems to be a waste of time.

Not to mention: Scholarships for student athletes are huge. They allow for the building for educations and careers. What good does it do to extend that to someone who isn’t going to be thinking about college for at least another five years?

Webb probably has legit quarterback chops for his age. That doesn’t, however, mean that you jettison him straight to SAT prep and spring football drills.

Sorry, college football recuiting realm. This has gone one step too far.
