The rivalry between Clemson and South Carolina will always be intense, but there appears to be a détante in its latest chapter. Shortly after Tigers quarterback DeShaun Watson proclaimed that he was not ever going to lose to South Carolina, Gamecocks defensive end commit Ulric Jones basically threatened Watson on Facebook.
Jones would later respond to criticism from Clemson fans with taunting, only adding fuel to the fire.
Fortunately, Jones has seen the error of his ways and took to Twitter to apologize, both to Watson and Clemson defensive end Shaq Lawson, who got involved at one point.
Regardless of apologies, the annual game between Clemson and South Carolina just got a lot more interesting. From Watson’s refusal to let the Gamecocks beat him to Steve Spurrier’s boys surely set to play with chips on their shoulders after losing to Clemson for the first time in five years last season, this game is going to be intense from start to finish this season, even though they aren’t conference rivals!
South Carolina went 7-6 (3-5 SEC) last season and won its fourth consecutive bowl game under Spurrier, while Clemson went 10-3 (6-2 ACC) and won its third straight bowl game under Dabo Swinney.
