Memphis, Ole Miss Book Home-and-Home Series

The Memphis Tigers and Ole Miss Rebels basketball teams will play a home-and-home series, starting at FedEx Forum on December 19 of this year, with the battle shifting to Oxford the following season. CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein reported the announcement.

It’s an interesting matchup not because it puts together a team from the American Athletic Conference against a squad from the feisty SEC, but in terms of location. The city of Memphis is very close to the Mississippi border and only about 75 miles away from the Ole Miss campus in Oxford, so this could have a hint of a battle of regional pride going on.

Thus, while it doesn’t seem like much on paper, this home-and-home series is more intriguing than meets the eye.

Memphis went 18-14 (10-8 AAC) last season, its sixth under coach Josh Pastner, and missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005. Ole Miss, meanwhile, went 21-13 (11-7 SEC) and made the big dance as a No. 11 seed before losing to No. 6 Xavier in the Round of 64.
