St. John’s has had a wild offseason.
A coaching change from Steve Lavin to Chris Mullin, the graduation of four terrific seniors and six new additions have sparked the fan base throughout Queens.
Last night Mullin kept on rolling, adding his seventh offseason addition as 4-star Chicago point guard Marcus LoVett (known as Bright Lights) committed to the Johnnies.
The 6-footer played his senior season at Morgan Park High School and had offers from Kansas, San Diego State, UNLV, Memphis, DePaul, Illinois and UC Irvine.
LoVett is a flashy, dynamic lead guard that can score on all three levels, distribute and make plays on the defensive end of the floor with his quick hands and tremendous footwork. He also has strong handles and works well in a pick-and-roll type offense.
Mullin has been very active this offseason as he has added Pittsburgh transfer Durand Johnson, Missouri State transfer Ron Mvuoika, Tennessee transfer Tariq Owens (has to sit out a year), shooting guard Malik Ellison, Iowa State transfer and former JUCO forward Darien Williams and 6-11 shot blocker Yankuba Sima.
With LoVett, the Johnnies now have more depth behind star guard Rysheed Jordan and they still have one scholarship remaining.
Mullin’s squad should now compete for a spot in the top half of the Big East, despite a lot of inexperience.
