The University of North Carolina has received a notice of allegations from the NCAA about “possible academic irregularities.” CBS Sports‘ Gary Parrish reported the story.
UNC has been under investigation for about a year after reports surfaced of major academic fraud that could have been going on for as long as 18 years. Per reports, the university offered bogus African-American Studies classes where students merely had to attend courses known as “paper classes” where attendance was not enforced and the only assignment was a one-page paper.
The situation has gotten so bad that ex-UNC student athletes have filed a lawsuit against the school, citing “breach of contract against UNC for a failure to provide academically sound classes with legitimate educational instruction.”
This story is still very much in the early stages, but one can’t help but wonder if UNC will be forced to vacate the championships won by the men’s basketball team in 2005 and 2009.
Regardless, Campus Sports will update news on the investigation as more details become available.
