Fan catches flying bat, doesn’t drop his beer

All baseball fans know the cliched fairytale of catching a foul ball in the stands with one hand, while holding a beer in the other and not spilling it.

One St. Paul Saints fan did one better, all while keeping a firm grip on his cerveza. caught the action from Thursday’s debut game at CHS Field against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. With the score knotted up 3-3 in the top of the third with two outs and a runner on second, a RedHawks hitter swung on a 0-1 pitch and lost his bat, sending it soaring into the seats down the first base line.

Then a fan–seemingly middle-aged man rocking a “HARVARD” sweatshirt–reached up and grabbed the bat with his left hand and kept it from clobbering the woman sitting to his right.

It gets better: As he stood up to the surrounding applause from the crowd, bat held high above his head, the fan held up his right hand to show that he hadn’t dropped his beer.

We don’t know which is more impressive. The bat catch, or the unharmed brew.
