Former Richmond Spiders big man Alonzo Nelson-Ododa will graduate and transfer to Pittsburgh for his final year of eligibility. Nelson-Ododa announced his decision on his personal Twitter page.
A 6’9″, 235 pound power forward from Atlanta, Nelson-Ododa averaged 6.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.7 blocks over 23.1 minutes per game last season while missing five weeks to recover from a facial fracture. In three years with the Spiders, he posted 5.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and just under two blocks per contest.
His decision to transfer to Pitt is a bit of a head-scratcher, as the Panthers have already added Brown transfer center Rafael Maia to shore up their frontcourt. Pittsburgh has also added JUCO big man Rozelle Nix, so minutes could be sparse for whomever draws the short straw. To put it bluntly, the team had one scholarship to dole out, and it was used on a rotational guy who will only be on the roster for a year.
Just the same, Pittsburgh needed a lot of help in the paint, and Nelson-Ododa will at least provide some much-needed depth in that area as the team looks to gain traction in the ACC.
In 2015, Pittsburgh was 19-15 (8-10 ACC) and lost to GW in the first round of the NIT. Since joining the ACC in 2013, the Panthers have gone 45-25 (19-17 ACC).
