While the past couple of weeks have been filled with graduations and end of the school year celebrations, one story has stood among all others, and it involves Bondurant-Farrar graduate Chris Norton.
Norton, a former Luther College football player, suffered a spinal cord injury back in 2010 and began his weekend by becoming engaged with long-time girlfriend Emily Summers. Just the next day, after years of rehab, Norton was able to walk across the stage with the aid of his fiancé bringing everyone in attendance to their feet.
“It was like my gameday,” Norton told the Des Moines Register referring to his graduation. “I was in the zone, focusing on what I needed to do and not worrying about anyone or anything else.
“I didn’t think it’d be so emotional. The energy in the room was really unbelievable, and it meant everything to have (Emily) there with me. It was the best weekend of my life. She’s the most incredible person I’ve ever met, and to share it with her, the woman I’m in love with, it couldn’t be any better.”
While many expected to see Norton receive his diploma, the marriage proposal came as a major surprise to Summers. Norton reserved at spot at the couples favorite restaurant, Rubaiyat in Decorah, where Summers thought she was picking up a graduation gift.
Summers, however, quickly realized this wasn’t the case as she walked in to John Legend’s “All of Me” playing and candles spelling out “Will you marry me?” The response was easy for Summers and shows how sports can be used as an outlet to show growth and love over time.
On behalf of Campus Sports, we would like to wish you congratulations to both Mr. Norton and Ms. Summers on an amazing weekend and bright future ahead of the both of you!
