Popcorn, Candy and Good Times: 5 Must See Summer Films

|

It’s not a secret that I am a film junkie and I live for a good storyline. Nothing can compare to the smell of fresh popcorn and the anticipation of being whisked away to a new world to laugh until we cry or experience fright that makes us believe in the supernatural.

This summer’s movie releases have the potential to do just that and much more.

In no particular order, I’ve listed 5 movies that have already created buzz in the entertainment industry despite not having been seen by the masses yet. I smell box office records.

  1. Mad Max: Fury Road – Released May 2015

The post-apocalyptic tale of two rebels Mad Max (Tom Hardy) and Furiosa (Charlize Theron) trying to outrun and overthrow the sadistic tyrannical Immortan Joe, while desperately trying to restore order to a chaotic wasteland.  The film features enthralling chase scenes, an A-list supporting cast, killer special effects and makeup guaranteeing a top notch cinematic experience.

  1. DOPE – In Theaters June 19, 2015

Originally released at this year’s Sundance film festival, Dope became a festival favorite drawing comparisons to cult classics Super Bad and Go.  Set in 2014, this film highlights the struggles of high school student Malcolm (Shameik Moore) and his best friends/band mates (Kiersey Clemson and Tony Revalori) through a hilariously chaotic coming of age tale touching upon the adolescent conflict of fitting in with one’s peers while maintaining self identity.  Hilariously, rapper A$AP Rocky plays Malcolm’s drug dealing nemesis and Zoe Kravitz stars as his love interest.  The 90’s soundtrack and wardrobe only adds to the allure of this film.

  1. Jurassic World – In Theaters June 12, 2015

From Executive Producer Steven Spielberg, the iconic saga that allowed us to experience what it would be like to interact with pre-historic creatures is back.  Picking up 20 years later, the island is now a fully functional theme park featuring all of our favorite dinosaurs and some exceptional new creatures.  But when corporate (Bryce Dallas Howard) pressure forces the staff (Chris Pratt, Vincent D’onofrio and B.D. Wong) to experiment with gene enhancement of the dinosaurs, something goes catastrophically wrong leading the cast on an adventure of terror and survival.

The summer just wouldn’t be complete without the quintessential stoner comedy.  Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart star in this summer’s up in smoke hit American Ultra.  Mike (Jesse Eisenberg) is an easygoing stoner living blissfully with his girlfriend Phoebe (Kristen Stewart).  When elements from his secret past pay him a visit and kidnap Phoebe, the highly trained sleeper agent involved in a deadly government operation is awakened.
