Whoever said you have to be a Power 5 school to see money clearly has not been following the Mountain West financials. This year the Mountain West is distributing a record $47 million among the various institutions.
Up from the $29 million last season, the Mountain West is rewarding those who represented the conference well.
Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson released the information that Boise St. would receive $5.3 million from the conference (up from $3.7 million last season) plus an additional $4 million for the Broncos appearance in the Fiesta Bowl.
Last season, Boise St. was towards the top of the conference receiving $3.7 million. This season, Fresno St. will receive just under $5 million, along with Nevada and Utah State receiving over $4 million.
From top to bottom the conference is attempting to upgrade from the previous year.
The basketball schedules include new mandates regarding certain level opponents that must be scheduled. The schools are making a greater push to cover the cost of attendance at eight of the twelve can currently do that.
The Mountain West made great strides last year showed by the record distribution, but there will be no slowing down as they try to become some of the finest schools in the nation.
