TBT: LeBron James’ 2001 interview with Kirk Herbstreit

LeBron sat slouched over with a hoops net for a chain, hugging his neck and draping over his chest.

Following a high school basketball state championship, 16-year-old LeBron spoke to Kirk Herbstreit about his teammates at St. Vincent-St. Mary H.S. (OH) and his future.

During his sophomore season, LeBron led his squad to a gold medal in the USA Basketball Youth Development tournament, while processing 24.0 PPG, 7.2 RPG and shooting nearly 50 percent from 3-point range.

When asked about playing football for the Buckeyes (Kirk’s alma mater), LeBron shrugged it off with Herbstreit in laughter, but failed in hesitating what the teenager wanted in basketball — to be elite.

Although dismissing Herb’s question, I’m sure Ohio State wouldn’t have minded his 6-foot-7 frame.
