The Conference USA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments will be played in Birmingham again next season. Conference USA officials made the announcement today on the Conference USA website.
“Birmingham is a wonderful location for our basketball championships,” conference commissioner Britton Banowsky said in the release.
“We appreciate the two great arenas and the city’s proximity to many of our fans. The downtown development is impressive, but most of all, we appreciate the spirit of the community. We look forward to another great tournament week in 2016.”
Just like last season, the women’s teams will play their games at the University of Alabama-Birmingham’s (UAB) Bartow Arena while the men play over at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center.
All fourteen teams will qualify this year as well.
It’s great for Birmingham, especially since the UAB men’s team made the NCAA Tournament after winning the Conference USA Tournament. There, the No. 14 Blazers upset the No. 3 Iowa State Cyclones before falling to No. 11 UCLA in the Round of 32.
The women’s team lost to Southern Mississippi in the conference tournament quarterfinal and did not qualify for the Women’s NCAA Tournament.
