If there’s anyone on the planet meant to come into possession of the ball crushed for Alex Rodriguez’s 3,000th career hit, it might as well be Zack Hample. The self-proclaimed “baseball collector” and author snagged the ball that went over the fence.
Unlike many who would be ready to turn it over to the team for a big ol’ bag of money, Hample doesn’t seem too interested in letting the chunk of history out of his sight.
Here's A-Rod's 3,000th hit/ball. Told the @Yankees I'm keeping it. Got it authenticated by @MLB. This is un-REAL. pic.twitter.com/qEo2qX9Iru

If you get a chance, look at the rest of Hample’s tweets from that day. He gets geeky when he realizes that his name is trending on social media and then pretends like he doesn’t know what “trending” is even though you know he does but is too darned excited. It is kind of fantastic.
It also doesn’t hurt that A-Rod hit the historical mark in dramatic fashion– but of course he did, he is Alex Rodriguez after all. Since a bloop single into shallow center would not have been grand enough, the Yankee went yard off Detroit Tigers’ franchise face Justin Verlander.
You don’t have to be a Yankees fan to want to hold onto that piece of memorabilia.
