Italian point guard Federico Mussini has committed to St. John’s University and will suit up for the team next season. Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reported the story.
This is a huge get for the Red Storm, as it looked like the first season of the Chris Mullin Era would be off to a rocky start. Star guard Rysheed Jordan declared for the draft (only to go unselected), and leading shot blocker Chris Obekpa recently decided to transfer.
Mussini won’t add much height at just six feet tall and a skinny 154 pounds, but his scrappiness and three-point shooting will add a much needed edge to the St. John’s backcourt. He currently plays for Pallacanestro Reggiana in his hometown of Reggio Emilia, so hopefully the NCAA won’t block him from suiting up for the Red Storm.
St. John’s went 21-12 (10-8 Big East) in former coach Steve Lavin’s final season and was eliminated in the Round of 64 of this year’s NCAA Tournament. The team has not made significant progress in the big dance since going to the Elite Eight under Mike Jarvis in 1999.
