Fred Hoiberg made surprise appearance at ISU fantasy camp

Though Fred Hoiberg is now the coach of the NBA’s Chicago Bulls, it’s heartwarming to know that he has not forgotten his roots. Hoiberg was the coach of the Iowa State Cyclones prior to taking the Bulls job, and took the liberty of making a surprise appearance at his alma mater’s fantasy camp last weekend.

Per Garrett Kroeger of the Iowa State Daily, Hoiberg gave a pregame speech that despite being primarily chalk talk, some got emotional. Cyclones forward Jameel McKay posted a video of Hoiberg’s speech on Instagram, and it is indeed hard to not get a little misty.

“It was one last game day with coach [Hoiberg], which made it an unreal feeling,” McKay said to Kroeger.

Though Iowa State will be coached by Steve Prohm next season, players can now take solace that even though Hoiberg now belongs to the NBA, he has not forgotten them and will pay a visit to campus when his schedule allows it.

Hopefully, his return during a fantasy camp is the first of many.

Hoiberg spent five seasons coaching the Cyclones and turned the program from a pretender into a regular contender, going 115-56 (49-39 Big 12) over that stretch with a trip to the Sweet Sixteen in 2014 and two Big 12 championships.
