Kings probing John Calipari about coaching, front office

The Sacramento Kings have reached out to Kentucky Wildcats head coach John Calipari to see if he is interested in taking over the team’s front office, and possibly head coaching job. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reported the development.

This report comes on the heels of a maelstrom of rumors last week that Kings star big man DeMarcus Cousins wanted to be traded to the Los Angeles Lakers due to a deteriorating relationship with head coach George Karl, who allegedly pushed the deal much to owner Vivek Ranadive’s chagrin.

Soon after, reports surfaced that the Kings were considering firing Karl over his insistence that Cousins be traded, though the front office of course denied that.

Now, it appears that firing Karl is back on the table and bringing in Calipari is a possibility, as the latter coached Cousins for a season at Kentucky. However, the Hall of Famer recently signed a lucrative extension with the university, so it would likely cost ownership $10 million a year or more to convince him to take on an NBA job in a market as small as Sacramento.

Nothing is official yet, but Campus Sports will update this story as more information becomes available.
