Seattle files for NHL expansion

As reported by NBC Sports and their NHL blog, Seattle has officially filed an application in consideration as a new club in the NHL along with Quebec, Las Vegas and Toronto.

A city revered for its craft beer revolution and coffee religion, RLB Holdings S and E intends to stake an arena in Tukwila County, which lies south of the Emerald City. The report continued to note that, if granted, an arena would open its doors in two years. Both the Seattle mayor and NHL commish Gary Bettman have acknowledged their excitement for a slot, but the only piece missing to the puzzle is said arena.

Once proposed were two alternatives in housing an NHL organization in Seattle, a city south of Tukwila or Bellevue. The real estate space in Tukwila, where an arena would be situated south of Boeing Field (aka King County International Airport), is owned by former Supersonics minority owner, Dave Sabey.

Bellevue, on the other hand, has been bidding for a site with a plan to attract investors for nearly two years. The city mentioned it’d also be interested in accommodating either an NHL or NBA franchise.

A review process for NHL expansion will begin July 6 with an application deadline set for August 10.
