Five-star PG Alterique Gilbert commits to UConn

Class of 2016 five-star point guard Alterique Gilbert, out of Miller Grove High School in Lithonia, Georgia, near Atlanta, has committed to UConn. Gilbert announced his decision on his personal Twitter page and explained his decision to ESPN’s Jeff Borzello.

Blessed beyond measure to have the opportunity to play college basketball . I've decided to end my recruitment and Commit to UCONN ! #Husky

Alterique Gilbert: “I love the relationship me and coach Ollie have. [My mom and I] came to a conclusion that it would be the fit for me.”

Gilbert had also received offers from Illinois, Texas, Syracuse and Louisville. He instead will join a Huskies team that is currently just a season removed from a borderline miraculous championship run and continuing to make noise in the American Athletic Conference (AAC). UConn didn’t make the big dance last year, but Ollie has the team moving in the right direction and has done a fine job recruiting, particularly with four-star point man Jalen Adams joining the team this coming season.

In the Class of 2016, Gilbert joins four-star center Mamadou Diarra as UConn’s commits so far.

No matter how you look at it, the Huskies are now officially a team to watch like a hawk over the next couple of seasons.
