The 2015 Women’s World Cup has concluded and it is the United States that has brought home its third World Cup trophy with a 5-2 win over Japan. The win was a dominant one for the USA as they scored four goals within the first sixteen minutes of the game.
Carli Lloyd was dominant throughout the contest as she became the first woman to score a hat trick in a Women’s World Cup final, including an insane midfield goal in the sixteenth minute. Lauren Holiday added on another goal in the first half in the fourteenth minute to make the score 4-0. Yuki Ogimi broke the scoreless drought for Japan to make the score 4-1 going into halftime.
Japan was able to cut the USA’s lead in half after the US made a blunder and Julie Johnston scored an own goal in fifty-second minute. The US responded just two minutes later when Tobin Heath scored the definitive goal to make the score 5-2.
The US Women’s National Team became the first team to win three Women’s World Cups, with the first two coming 1991 and 1999 respectively.

The US was able to avenge their loss to Japan in 2011 when they lost in penalty kicks of the final. The US women also took home a few individual awards with Carli Lloyd taking home the Golden Ball, which is awarded to the best player of the tournament, and the Silver Boot. She scored seven goals in the tournament, with three coming in the final. Hope Solo allowed only one goal going into the final, which was good enough to win her the Golden Glove award.
The USA women had a triumphant run throughout the tournament and it feels so good to finally bring home another trophy. I believe that we just won!
