Woman reportedly yelled slurs at ex-FSU QB before punch

Though De’Andre Johnson has been dismissed from Florida State University, the twists and the turns keep coming in the case against him.

Speaking to NBC News, Johnson’s lawyer Jose Baez claimed that prior to Johnson throwing the punch, the woman he is seen hitting on camera shouted racial slurs at him.

The woman raised her fist and shouted “racial epithets” at Johnson when the player accidentally made contact when he was walking up to the bar, lawyer Jose Baez told NBC News.

Johnson “tried to deescalate the situation” but the woman “kneed him in the groin area” and “took another swing before he retaliated,” the attorney added.

“All he wants to do is learn from this experience and move on and get an education,” Baez said. “We certainly don’t want him to pay for the rest of his life for an incident that occurred in a bar.”

Even if the woman was shouting such language at Johnson prior to his punching her, it doesn’t offer an excuse for his behavior. Though only a freshman (at least before he was dismissed from the university yesterday), Johnson was still a student-athlete at a Division I school and thus a public figure. He is thus held to a higher standard of behavior.

Moreover, the world of sports is taking a hard stance on violence against women and considering how Johnson is on tape striking this particular young lady hard in the face, he’s dug himself into quite a hole.
