Duke, Kentucky in the lead for 7-footer DeAndre Ayton

DeAndre Ayton is a five-star seven-footer who won’t graduate from high school until 2017, but two schools are allegedly already in the lead for his services once he’s ready to start college.

According to Brett Dawson of Rivals, the Duke Blue Devils and Kentucky Wildcats are the two current favorites to land a commit from Ayton, who currently plays at San Diego’s Balboa City High School.

Either school would be a great landing spot for Ayton, as both have recently seen centers drafted into the NBA. Former Duke Blue Devil and national champion Jahlil Okafor was picked third overall by the Philadelphia 76ers, while former Kentucky big man Willie Cauley-Stein went sixth to the Sacramento Kings.

Given Ayton’s skillset, he could succeed at either school. He has the developing low post presence, size and face-up game to succeed in Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski’s run-and-gun system while at Kentucky, his shot blocking and rebounding abilities can help him play a big role on the defensive end and maybe even on offense in John Calipari’s dribble-drive offense.

Granted, Ayton still has two years of high school left and won’t need to commit to any program for a good long while. On top of Duke and Kentucky, he has drawn interest from Arizona and San Diego State.

Campus Sports will update Ayton’s decison-making process as more information becomes available.
