Former WVU QB Ford Childress to walk on at Fresno State

Former West Virginia Mountaineers quarterback Ford Childress will walk on for the Fresno State Bulldogs. Jackson Moore of Scout.com had the initial report.

Childress becomes the second former Mountaineer to join Fresno State this offseason, the other being running back Dustin Garrison.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Childress’ future pans out, as he was suspended from WVU early in 2014 and simply didn’t enroll in classes shortly afterward. No reason was given for the suspension, but Childress also has had some off-field issues in the past. In 2012, he was arrested for DUI.

Childress would be available to play immediately since he sat out last season at Trinity Valley Community College, but his getting the starting job is all but guaranteed. Rising sophomore Zack Greenlee is also on the roster, so Childress will have to go above and beyond to show that he deserves the starting job.

Fresno State has gone 26-14 (19-5 MWC) in three years under coach Tim DeRuyter and also has won two Mountain West titles. The Bulldogs open 2015 at home on September 3, taking on the Southland’s Abilene Christian Wildcats.
