Bronko Nagurski Trophy watchlist released

As college football award season continues, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy — awarded annually to the top defensive player in the nation — is the latest to unveil its preseason watchlist.  This season’s watchlist features a whopping 88 players, with Arizona Wildcats linebacker Scooby Wright III, last year’s winner of the award, leading the way.

If Wright was able to win the Nagurski Trophy in consecutive years, he would become only the second person to ever do so. Currently, Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald is the only two-time Nagurski Trophy winner from his days as a linebacker in 1995 and 1996.

Wright is a very talented player and has potential to repeat with the award, but he will face stiff competition from the likes of Ohio State star Joey Bosa, Florida State defensive back Jalen Ramsey and Michigan State end Shilique Calhoun among others.

This year’s winner will be announced on Dec. 7, after five finalists are chosen from the Football Writers Association of America All-American Team.
