Jim Harbaugh’s hat could have a hefty price tag

The University of Michigan announced that it would switch from adidas to Nike starting next season, and Nike could be set to reap major benefits from the deal thanks to head coach Jim Harbaugh.

As was reported by Matthew Kish of the Portland Business Journal, a sports analytics firm has estimated that if Harbaugh wears a hat with the signature Nike swoosh on it, Nike could get nearly an extra $1 million in exposure. Under the current deal with adidas, roughly $8.2 million is made per year in apparel and cash.

Even more insane is that Michigan football is estimated to make $10.7 million in exposure if Harbaugh goes hatless, and $11.6 million if he wears a hat with logos visible.

Given how Harbaugh is a draw on his name alone and generated lots of buzz when he was hired at Michigan at the end of last year following his departure from the San Francisco 49ers, one can only imagine that he has the potential to exceed those estimates whether or not he wears a hat with or without the Nike swoosh on it.

Michigan opens the 2015 season and the Harbaugh Era on the road against Utah on September 3.
