Kevin Sumlin open to playing two QBs this season?

The Texas A&M Aggies have two excellent young quarterbacks on this year’s roster in rising sophomore Kyle Allen and five-star freshman Kyler Murray, and head coach Kevin Sumlin could be prepared to play the both of them in 2015.

As was reported by Kate Hairopoulos of The Dallas Morning News, Sumlin implied that while nothing was yet set in stone, the team could very well play both Murray and Allen.

“I really haven’t done it before. We’ll see. We’ve never started out that way. That doesn’t mean that we won’t. We’ll see where we are in fall. Kyle is confident right now and should be. …Kyler is a guy who all he’s done is won. It’s like anything else. It’s not like Kyler didn’t know Kyle Allen was the MVP of the bowl game. That didn’t stop him. He’s coming to compete, and that’s what makes both of those guys who they are. Kyle is the same way. He committed before Johnny’s [Manziel] junior year. He didn’t know what was going to happen. Those guys aren’t going to back down from each other. That’s going to make us a better football team. We’ll make a decision.”

Though Allen went 3-2 as a starter last season, including leading the Aggies to a win over West Virginia in the Autozone Liberty Bowl, the decision on who will be under center in 2015 is harder than it appears. Allen is talented, but Murray is also a freak of an athlete who is viewed as a dual threat quarterback despite being on the smaller side at just 5-foot-11, 180 pounds. Given the success that a smaller QB like Johnny Manziel had in Sumlin’s offense, one can see why Murray might be the better option.

But it should also be noted that Murray is still just 17 and won’t turn 18 until next month. Though he has no known character issues, maturity is always a factor in determining a starting quarterback.
