Maryland enjoyed its best season under head coach Mark Turgeon in its first year in the Big Ten, and the team’s non-conference schedule for next season gives the team some top competition.
As was reported on the university’s official athletics site, the Terps are going to have some fine non-conference games in the 2015-16 season, namely ones against Georgetown, North Carolina and UConn.
“We’re excited to play a strong and competitive non-conference schedule that includes terrific marquee matchups featuring some of college basketball’s perennial powers,” said head coach Mark Turgeon. “This will provide great challenges and opportunities for our team prior to the start of conference play.”
The game against Georgetown will be played in College Park, the Hoyas’ first visit to the area since 1973, and should provide a fair amount of pre-game drama since College Park is not particularly far from Georgetown’s home city of Washington, DC.
Regarding the North Carolina game, that already has some fire attached to it as the two programs used to be ACC rivals. With Connecticut, fans will get to see a rematch of the fateful Elite Eight contest from the 2002 NCAA Tournament, which the Terps ultimately won.
Other non-conference games include a November trip to Mexico to face an Illinois State team that defeated dangerous Wichita State in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament last season, as well as either TCU or Dan Hurley-led Rhode Island. Needless to say, Terps basketball will definitely be exciting to watch next season.
Maryland’s other non-conference opponents this year include Mount St. Mary’s, Southern New Hampshire, Rider, Princeton, Marshall, Cleveland State, St. Francis (PA) and Maryland-Eastern Shore.
