Jalen Ramsey may be set to do great work for Florida State as a cornerback on the football team for the third year in a row in 2015, but not many people know that he also competes in track and field. Though he’s getting to a point in his football career where he may want to focus solely on one sport, Ramsey has no plans to do so and said as much to Bud Elliott of Tomahawk Nation, part of the SB Nation family.

Ramsey has 128 tackles, four sacks, three interceptions and three forced fumbles (one for a touchdown) in two years with the Seminoles, so one would think that he would drop track and field in order to build up his overall value in football. But that is not the case as Ramsey, a long jumper and sprinter, has his sights set on competing at the Summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro next year.
It is an unconventional choice on Ramsey’s part, but he obviously has a dream that he plans on pursuing seriously and this writer highly respects him for doing so. Plus, many other college athletes have competed in two sports at once, as former FSU quarterback Jameis Winston also played baseball while at the university. And let’s not forget former Seminole Deion Sanders, who played both baseball and football on the professional level. And then there is the storied Bo Jackson, who did the same.
Ramsey doesn’t have to decide on which sport he wants to focus on solely just yet, but it’s admirable that he refuses to give up one to focus on the other. Hopefully, his driven attitude results in him achieving great success on whichever road he opts to take in the future.
Florida State opens the season at home against Texas State on September 5.
