Rick Pitino’s international coaching debut did not go the way he would have wanted. Louisville’s head basketball coach is at the Pan Am Games in Canada, coaching the Puerto Rico’s national team.
Puerto Rico started the games facing Brazil, in pool play, Tuesday morning. The game did not start off well as Puerto Rico fell behind 31-6 in the first quarter. It did not improve much for them either as the final score was 92-59.
Puerto Rico shot 33 percent and just could not keep up with Brazil, who shot 53 percent. No player shot over 8 points for Puerto Rico, with Jearrell De Jesus and Gilberto Clavell scoring the most with 8 each. Brazil’s Rafael Hettsheimeir scored more than Puerto Rico did as a team in the first two quarters, with 19 points for the game.
Pitino and his team take the court again on Wednesday at 9 p.m. against the United States. The United States is set to play their first game tonight against Venezuela.
