Though the team has an experienced starter in graduate transfer and former Notre Dame QB Everett Golson, it appears that the Florida State Seminoles could be rolling with junior Sean Maguire as their starting quarterback. Per Byron Dobson of the Tallahassee Democrat, Maguire is listed as the team’s starter in the FSU media guide.
It just goes to show that head coach Jimbo Fisher will not be playing favorites in the weeks leading up to the season. Sure, Golson may have thrown for 5,850 yards and 41 touchdowns while rushing for 581 yards and 14 scores in two years with the Fighting Irish, but that appears to be all moot. Maguire knows the system, and redshirt freshman J.J. Cosentino could also get some snaps under center.
Granted, it’s still early and between now and Week 1, a lot could happen that ultimately results in Maguire being bumped down to backup duty again. But it’s still refreshing to see that Golson will have to earn his playing time just like any other new player, no matter how much experience and talent he may have.
Florida State opens the season at Doak Campbell Stadium against the Sun Belt’s Texas State Bobcats on September 5.
