Two days after losing backup cornerback David Johnson to a transfer, the Missouri Tigers are about to lose another defensive back to the same avenue. A university spokesperson told Dave Matter of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that on top of Johnson’s departure, safety Chaston Ward will also leave the team.
Ward was listed as the backup strong safety on the team’s depth chart, but spent most of his time practicing with the third team. Thus, it looks like he wants to go elsewhere for more playing time.
These losses aren’t a huge blow for Mizzou, but head coach Gary Pinkel thrives on having as much depth as possible on his roster and this gets rid of some. Ward provided just that with solid size for his position at 6-foot-1, 205 pounds and appeared in 14 games last year, but only managed five total tackles.
If he transfers to another FBS program, chances are he will have to sit out a year.
Ward has not given any indication as to where he may transfer, but Campus Sports will update this story as more information becomes available.
Mizzou opens the season at home against the OVC’s Southeast Missouri State Redhawks on September 5.
