UAB Blazers football won’t be back until 2017, but one former player has already announced his intentions to suit up for the team once the program is back in full swing.
Speaking to Gary Estwick of AL.com, kicker Nick Vogel confirmed that he was indeed returning to Birmingham to play for UAB, the school he signed with initially before transferring to Southern Miss in light of the university shutting the football program down last December.
“Honestly, I never should have left UAB,” said Vogel. “When they closed down football, everybody kind of scrambled around. It was a situation where you had a very little amount of time to find a school.
“I made a mistake. Southern Miss just wasn’t a good fit for me.”
Vogel redshirted as a true freshman last season and joined Southern Miss for spring practice but with Blazers football not coming back for another two years, just how much eligibility he or others will have left remains to be seen.
Either way, it’s great to see that UAB football will be coming back for sure.
