Northern Illinois wide receiver Skyler Monaghan was arrested early Thursday morning for driving under the influence. That would seem bad enough but according to Katie Smith of The Daily Chronicle, Monaghan was also charged with driving an uninsured vehicle, speeding (he was pulled over for going 93 mph in a 55mph zone) and possession of a fraudulent driver’s license.
Monaghan has subsequently been suspended from the team and is facing one to three years in prison from the fake ID charge alone, as it is a Class 4 felony. The fact that his BAC was over the limit is a mere afterthought.
Following his arrest, Monaghan was released on $300 bail and has a court date set for August 26. NIU had no comment on the incident other than the fact that Monaghan has been suspended indefinitely. The rising sophomore played mostly on special teams last season.
Campus Sports will update Monaghan’s situation as more information becomes available.
NIU opens the season at home against UNLV on September 5.
