For the duration of time the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have participated in college football, they have done so as an Independent.
Still, as time passes, things change and with the formation of the College Football Playoff system, teams almost need to join a power six conference.
Nonetheless, the Fighting Irish have resisted the urge to move, and it has developed into a major topic of discussion across the land. Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney was the most recent coach to weigh-in on the topic during ESPN’s car washes.
Dabo Swinney agrees w/Gary Pinkel: “Absolutely Notre Dame needs to be in conference or play 13 games to be in @CFBPlayoff"

On top of all this, Swinney wasn’t the only high profile head coach to express his opinions.
Paul Johnson: “Notre Dame should be in the ACC. It’s another brand program to strengthen the conference.”

If Notre Dame expects to compete with the nation’s finest, they must either play a 13-game schedule or join a conference. By now, this isn’t just speculation, its a fact and the Fighting Irish must act accordingly.
