In the early 2000’s, WWE liked to take risks with its on-screen characters. You had the storyline gay couple of Billy Gunn and Chuck Palumbo, who were quite successful as Tag Team Champions, and then you had Eric Bischoff’s Hot Lesbian Action segment that went basically nowhere, but had boys going through puberty going crazy.
Another storyline that never made it to television was one that involves one of the baddest men in the wrestling world today.
SEScoops reported that four-time WWE Champion and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar was originally supposed to have a much different feel to his character upon his debut in 2002. WWE Magazine writer Brian Solomon pitched an idea to WWE principal owner Stephanie McMahon about a bad-ass character who outs himself as being gay, but still was a top main eventer.
That character was supposed to be Lesnar.
Oddly enough, I could have seen that working with the company in 2002. Now with there being a handful of openly gay or bisexual superstars and Divas in the WWE and the fact that the company is partnered with GLAAD, I don’t think it would fly as well.
Maybe this would explain the on-air kiss Lesnar gave former superstar Kurt Angle on Smackdown leading up to their match at Wrestlemania XIX in 2003.
I don’t know how different Lesnar’s career would have been had this idea seen the light of day, but it surely would have made waves within the company.
