A big name associated with the Oregon Ducks this year is that of graduate transfer Vernon Adams, and a big compliment was just thrown his way.
In a piece spotlighting Oregon and its players who could end up getting drafted next spring, Rob Rang of CBS Sports went so far as to compare Adams to Seattle Seahawks star quarterback and Super Bowl-winner Russell Wilson.
“Despite his less-than-ideal size and level of competition to this point, Adams is an ideal fit in Oregon’s up-tempo offense as a dual-threat quarterback,” Rang wrote. “More importantly, he’s a legitimate NFL talent with a combination of mobility and accuracy in and out of the pocket that is sure to draw plenty of comparisons to Seattle Seahawks’ star Russell Wilson.”
High praise indeed.
“Like Wilson, Adams does resort to creating space for himself when his initial read is taken,” he added. “Also like Wilson, however, Adams excels in the improvisation of the game, buying time with his legs while keeping his eyes downfield rather than scrambling. It is Adams’ accuracy on a variety of throws that makes him most intriguing. Adams has an efficient, over-the-top release and enough velocity to zip passes through tight windows and his touch on deeper bucket throws is even more impressive.”
It’s certainly hard to argue with Rang’s analysis, as Adams has a similar build to Wilson at six feet tall, 200 pounds and does a great job in the passing game along with using his legs.
In three seasons for the FCS’ Eastern Washington Eagles of the Big Sky Conference, Adams threw for 10,438 yards and 110 touchdowns while completing 64.2 percent of his passes. On the ground, he had 1,232 rush yards for 11 scores.
That sort of approach to the game is only going to help Adams at Oregon, who just lost Heisman-winning quarterback Marcus Mariota to the NFL’s Tennessee Titans.
Thus, if Adams works hard in practice and beats out Jeff Lockie for the starting quarterback’s job, then perhaps Rang’s comparing him to Wilson could end up being completely justified.
