St. John’s transfer Chris Obekpa headed to UNLV

Former St. John’s Red Storm big man Chris Obekpa has committed to UNLV, according to Rob Dauster of NBC Sports’ College Basketball Talk. Obekpa also posted his announcement on his Instagram.

Obekpa averaged seven rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game his junior season at St. John’s, and was suspended late in the season due to a failed drug test. He then opted to leave the program over a rift with new head coach Chris Mullin, per Dauster.

Obekpa now must sit out a year before suiting up for UNLV in 2016-17, his final year of eligibility. UNLV ranked third in the nation in blocked shots last season, so having a powerful ball swatter in Obekpa on the team in a couple of years should keep the Runnin’ Rebels strong in the paing for at least a season.
