Aldon Smith was beginning to seriously discuss a new contract with the San Francisco 49ers, but he may have shot those negotiations in the foot with his latest off-the-field issue. He was reportedly arrested this morning on three charges, including DUI, hit and run and vandalism.

Hearing this news might just force the 49ers to move on from him like they were considering the last time he did something incredibly stupid off-the-field. This isn’t the first time that he has been charged with DUI either, as he has seen those charges two times before this situation. San Francisco could very well choose this time to let him go.
There is no denying the fact that Smith is one of the most talented defensive players in the NFL. That being said, it is becoming hard to rely on him to be on-the-field with all of his issues.
Smith is just 25 years old, but these types of issues have ruined many careers in the past. Last season with the 49ers, Smith played in just seven games and racked up 15 tackles and 2.0 sacks. He showed his full potential during the 2012 season with San Francisco when he recorded 66 tackles, 19.5 sacks, an interception and three forced fumbles.
Looking ahead at the next few weeks, the NFL is going to be laying a fairly hefty suspension on Smith. The 49ers will have to decide whether or not they want to stick with him once again, even though he has demonstrated that he has not changed one bit from the first time all of this happened.
Expect to see the 49ers respond fairly aggressively to this big mistake by Smith, and don’t be surprised if they let him go.
