San Francisco 49ers release LB Aldon Smith after arrest

The San Francisco 49ers were disappointed when they heard the news that star linebacker Aldon Smith had been arrested this morning on three charges. Those charges were a DUI, hit and run as well as a vandalism charge. It didn’t take them long to respond and make a decision on his future with the team, and they have chosen to release him and move on despite his star potential.

While this is a disappointing step for the 49ers to take, it was not a surprise at all after the history of off-the-field issues that Smith has had.

During the 2014 season with the 49ers, Smith was only able to play in seven regular season games. He recorded 15 tackles and 2.0 sacks on the season. Smith hasn’t been the superstar that many expected him to become since the 2012 season where he racked up 66 tackles, 19.5 sacks, an interception and three forced fumbles.

It will be interesting to see what kind of punishment Smith is facing from the NFL, and whether or not he gets into trouble from a legal standpoint. Smith has been arrested twice before on DUI charges, which makes it obvious from this situation that he has yet to learn from his many mistakes.

At just 25 years old, it is a shame to see Smith wasting the incredible talent that he has been given. He could have worked hard and become a superstar, but chose instead to make stupid decisions off-the-field that have ruined his career. There is a good chance that he will get another chance with a different team, but the 49ers made the right decision by cutting ties with him after this situation.
