Auburn Tigers wide receiver D’haquille Williams is still on suspension for an undisclosed disciplinary issue and there is no immediate timetable for his reinstatement, head coach Gus Malzahn said to reporters earlier today.
When asked further about his potential No. 1 receiver’s status, Malzahn was blunt. “I’ll tell you when he gets back,” he said.
This isn’t the first time that Williams has been suspended at Auburn, as he was suspended for the Outback Bowl last season. Despite his issues, he is a highly talented receiver and ranked first on the team with 45 receptions last season and five touchdowns, and was also second with 730 yards.
Williams can hopefully get his head screwed on straight and be reinstated sooner rather than later, as Auburn’s season opener against Louisville is fast approaching.
With a new quarterback under center in Jeremy Johnson, Malzahn would be wise to make sure that Williams (assuming he is still part of the team in the near future) gets plenty of reps in practice in the coming weeks so that the entire offense and team can be on the same page once they step on the field at the Georgia Dome.
Disciplinary issues aside, Williams has boatloads of talent and is too important to the team’s passing attack now that Sammie Coates is in the NFL.
