Marquette freshman, awaiting clearance, to miss Italy trip

When the Marquette Golden Eagles men’s basketball team takes its long-anticipated trip to Italy this week, they will be doing so with freshman wing Haanif Cheatham unable to play. Per Matt Velazquez of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Cheatham may travel with the team but not participate in any games as he awaits NCAA clearance.

“It’s a procedure that all kids have to go through, and some take longer than others,” said head coach Steve Wojciechowski, who informed the rest of the team after Sunday’s practice. “It’s unfortunate, but the good news is he’s able to travel to Italy with us.”

A former four-star recruit out of Florida’s Pembroke Pines Charter School, near Fort Lauderdale, Cheatham would have benefitted from the exhibition trip to Italy as it would have let him adjust to the level of competition he is likely to face in the Big East and the collegiate level in general. Instead, he will just get the experience of traveling out of the United States and, hopefully sooner rather than later, get NCAA clearance so that he can focus on fitting in with the team and not just playing the waiting game.
