Tennis stars top list of Forbes highest paid female athletes

Another year, another account from Forbes on the world’s highest paid female athletes. And like year’s past, the tennis stars have the fattest bank accounts.

Maria Sharapova reportedly tops the list for the 11th straight year. The tall blonde phenom earned a cool $29.7 million between June 2014 and June 2015 from prize money and endorsements.

Serena Williams–one of the sports’ biggest names and easily the “pop star rival” to Sharapova–banked $24.6 million in that time frame.

Yes this seems odd, given Williams contuing success on the court. Per Forbes writer Kurt Badenhausen, who wrote the article on the list:

“Williams is arguably the greatest female athlete of all-time, but sponsors have often eschewed the 21-time Grand Slam singles champ. Williams’ skin color, muscular body type and one memorable outburst at the U.S. Open in 2009 have all been blamed for the endorsement gap between Williams and Sharapova.”

The list continues with Caroline Wozniacki ranking third (reportedly $14.6 million including $11 million off-court), and NASCAR star Danicka Patrick coming in fourth ($13.9 million).
