Blake Barnett is undoubtedly the best pickup for the Alabama Crimson Tide in their entire 2015 class. The freshman quarterback may not be ready for the big stage of the SEC this season, but former college and Arena Football quarterback and now football guru George Whitfield seems to think differently.
Barnett has been working with Whitfield this summer trying to perfect his craft. According to College Spun, Whitfield has liked the progression he has seen in Barnett this summer.
Whitfield told 247 Sports:
“I understand what I’m about to say is going to pop some eyes open in the barber shop, but Blake is, by far, the best 18-year-old quarterback that I’ve ever been around,” Whitfield said. “And I’ve got to put that into that context because it’s really where you are at certain stages. I didn’t know Andrew (Luck) at 18. I didn’t know some of the rest of those kids. But he’s further along than some of the prospects we’ve worked with when they came out of college, just physically and skill set-wise and things of that sort.”
The Crimson Tide haven’t named a starting quarterback as of yet, but I doubt that Nick Saban will go into battle with a true freshman. However, this is a new look Crimson Tide team, so there is a chance Barnett could see the field this season.
Alabama opens the season on September 5 when they play the Wisconsin Badgers in AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
