NC State QB Jakobi Meyers to wear Russell Wilson’s No. 16

N.C. State quarterback Jakobi Meyers will channel Super Bowl winner and former Wolfpack QB Russell Wilson this season, as he has chosen to wear uniform No. 16 and a “Legends” patch. Joe Giglio of The News & Observer reported the development.

Though Wilson’s jersey is not officially retired by the program, it does have “legends” status and rightfully so. In three seasons with the Wolfpack, Wilson threw for 8,545 yards and 76 touchdowns while rushing for 1,083 yards and 17 scores before transferring to Wisconsin. Like Wilson, Meyers is also an excellent baseball player, and Wolfpack head coach Dave Doeren spoke to Giglio about Meyers’ choice.

“I told him there’s a lot that goes with that number,” Doeren said of No. 16. “It doesn’t mean that he’s going to be the next Russell Wilson. He’s got to prove that, but he definitely has all the attributes that you like.”

Fortunately for Meyers, a three-star recruit from Georgia, the pressure won’t exactly be on from the get-go for him. He’ll enter training camp as a backup to senior Jacoby Brissett, along with redshirt freshman Jalan McClendon. With his skill set, however, don’t be surprised if Doeren finds a way to give him some playing time and, in time, he becomes just as electrifying a player as Wilson.
N.C. State opens the season at home against the Sun Belt’s Troy Trojans on September 5.
