It seems as though things are coming full circle for the 2014 NFL Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt in terms of what he was doing before he became the superstar he is today. Between games during his time playing at both Central Michigan and Wisconsin, Watt was a pizza delivery boy. He will now be joining another NFL superstar as a spokesman for one of the world’s largest pizza chains.
According to ESPN, Watt, who was delivering pizzas as recently as 2008, signed on to be a spokesman for Papa John’s alongside Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, who has been with the chain since 2012, on Wednesday. Watt said he couldn’t be more proud of his position with the company.
“Having been in the pizza world before, I really appreciate what Papa John’s is doing with their ingredients,” Watt said.
Recently, Watt admitted to having a daily diet of over 9,000 calories. While pizza isn’t a part of that diet, he does love the food as part of a cheat meal.
Founder and CEO of Papa John’s John Schnatter talked about how happy he was to welcome Watt into the family.
“We had the offensive player of the year and now we have the defensive player of the year,” said John Schnatter, founder and chief executive of Papa John’s. “But as good as Peyton and J.J. are on the field, they’re better people off of it.”
Watt was involved with Papa John’s last season where ten percent of pizza sales on Tuesday in the Houston area went to his foundation. Over $400,000 was raised for his foundation, which was way beyond expectations. The success of the weekly deal was thanks mostly to a contest being held by Papa John’s where one lucky customer got the chance to have a pizza delivered by Watt or to have a pizza party with him.
I guess good things really do happen to great people. Good for Watt and even better for Papa John’s to have such a celebrity representing their brand now. I’m sure he will do the brand proud.
