New national championship odds from the infamous Westgate Las Vegas Superbook have come out and, not surprisingly, the Ohio State Buckeyes are still the favorites at 5-2.
Following the Buckeyes are Texas Christian and Alabama, whose odds are both 5-1. Then come Baylor and USC, both at 12-1.
At this point, it’s hard to imagine any team other than Ohio State bringing home the title again. The Buckeyes have plenty of returning players from last year’s roster, and have three players capable of playing quarterback, though Braxton Miller has switched to wide receiver. Just the same, the fact that head coach Urban Meyer has two more than capable quarterbacks in J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones, not to mention a great running back in Ezekiel Elliott and defensive monster Joey Bosa, makes Ohio State a team that is incredibly tough to beat.
The same can be said for TCU, who have a key returning player in quarterback and Heisman candidate Trevone Boykin as well as running back Aaron Green and receivers Josh Doctson and Kolby Listenbee.
The only team that really feels out of place is Alabama, who lost to receiver Amari Cooper to the NFL Draft and hasn’t even named a starting quarterback for 2015 yet, though running back Kenyan Drake is a lock to have a great season. If anything, it looks like the oddsmakers are banking more on the recruiting abilities of coach Nick Saban than the strength of the roster itself. There isn’t anything wrong with that, but it’s still a big gamble.
Just the same, with these new odds out, let the excitement of college football season begin!
