New Zealand center Tai Wynyard will finish up his high school coursework in the fall and subsequently join the University of Kentucky program in December. Wynyard spoke to Kentucky fansite VaughtsViews.com and announced his intentions.
“I’m sure I will be coming to UK in December to begin classes winter/spring semester,” Wynyard told thewebsite VaughtsViews.com. “I’m looking forward to and excited about joining the program in December.”
Standing 6-foot-10 and weighing 260 pounds, just what Wynyard’s role this season will be remains to be seen. Kentucky already has Australian big man Isaac Humphries coming in this season, and five-star center Skal Labissiere is still waiting for clearance from the NCAA Eligibility Center. Thus, perhaps a redshirt is in Wynyard’s future since there is little point to him losing a year of eligibility when he’s set to have limited playing time. Moreover, though talented, he isn’t going to be an almost certain one-and-done like Labissiere.
Thus, with no need to rush the start to his professional career, Wynyard has some decisions to make as his enrollment date at the university draws nearer.
Campus Sports will update Wynyard’s process as any new information becomes available.
